Art Story
Art Story
Life Balance is a photograph of a tree outside the church Philip and I decided to attend after our season of “church hunting.”
We had been attending a church where everything felt “fine.” There was nothing we didn’t like, but we weren’t being pushed to grow. One day, as we pulled into the parking lot, I felt God telling me it was time to find a new church. After the service, Philip shared that he had received the same message. At the time, we were still dating, and it was a beautiful confirmation that God was already at the center of our relationship.
So we decided to attend a different church nearly every week until we found one that felt like home. On the day we first visited this church, we both quietly sensed God telling us this was the right place.
Outside the new church stood a tree with an orange spot where a limb had been pruned—a symbol of growth and transformation that resonated deeply with me.
We first visited to hear a sermon on The Apologetics and felt called to return. On my next visit, I brought my camera to capture the beauty of the trees surrounding the church—each one a testament to the intentional pruning that allows for new growth.
This tree, with its textured bark, its circles, and the subtle mold that others might dismiss as ugly, reflected the transformation that happens inside us when we allow God to work. Pruning away what was no longer growing made room for something new and healthy.
Just as the tree doesn’t waste strength feeding a dead limb, we are called to let go of what isn’t serving us—habits, resentments, fears. The process isn’t always easy or comfortable, and real change rarely happens when everything is “fine.” Often, the pain of staying the same has to outweigh the pain of change before transformation takes root.
The journey toward balance isn’t just about cutting things out, but about aligning our lives so we can grow, heal, and become who God is shaping us to be. We all have our own healing journeys. Mine has been shaped by prayer, therapy, and honest reflection. Sometimes, it’s seeing beauty in the rough edges; other times, it’s listening to the Lord about what needs to be pruned away.
Most importantly, transformation is not a one-time event. True balance and renewal are ongoing, and our growth continues until the day we are made perfect in heaven. Life Balance is a daily reminder to pause, give thanks for how far you’ve come, and ask God what new growth He’s inviting into your life.
May this piece encourage you to look for beauty in unexpected places, to be intentional about what stays and what goes, and to trust that every season of pruning can lead to new life that’s better than anything you could have ever imagined.
