I created Ring Leader during a time when life felt chaotic and unpredictable, and instead of resisting it, I leaned in. This piece is about taking charge, stepping out of your comfort zone, and leading your own story, even when life feels like one big circus.
The inspiration came from a night with my husband, binge-watching a murder drama series in bed. He’s the one who looked over and said, “What if you added some pink?” At first, I hesitated (pink wasn’t in my comfort zone), but just like when he suggested painting our front door yellow, he was absolutely right. That small nudge opened up the floodgates for creativity.
Ring Leader is bold. Her teal hair, dripping lips, and carnival motifs reflect a fearless, unapologetic energy. The lines flowing from her head mimic a circus tent, representing life’s constant distractions and challenges. And hidden within are little surprises like the upside-down bicycle and tent shapes in her eyes, all coming together to create an artwork that dares you to look closer.
For me, the swings at an amusement park were always my favorite ride. They felt so freeing, like nothing could hold me back. That same feeling influenced Ring Leader—she’s about finding freedom, even in chaos, and letting that energy spark your creativity.
Unlike my other works, which often lean into calmness and stillness, Ring Leader shakes things up. She’s a reminder that if life feels out of rhythm, sometimes the best thing you can do is lean into the wildness and find your own way through. Every time I stop to look at her hanging in my studio, it feels like she’s daring me to push boundaries, crank up my bravery, and get a little wild.
